In upstate New York, we have actually two long seasons, summer and winter. The spring and fall are very short and very precious!! However, the spring is always so pleasant. First the pear tree blooms ( I missed the time to take the picture, now have to wait till next year…) then the crabapple, apple, and dogwood.
This is the dogwood tree 火星人 planted. The soil in our yard is clay, very hard and full of gravels and stones, it was very difficult to dig the hole for it. The first dogwood species we picked was light-pink-flowered “Rutgers” hybrid, yet it did not survive within an year. The nursery did not have the same species in stock, so we had to replace it with a “Cherokee Brave” which has a darker, maroon-ish flower as in the above picture.
火星人很惜人愛物。We were thinking to get a Espalier Fruit Trees to protect the side of the house which is facing the severe wind. This is the apple tree we wanted to train to be flat and short ( 火星人說這樣 I can reach the branch and pick up the apple later - since I am not very tall ).
I
had studied online for hours to make sure if the espalier is right for us. We found out that the
chosen espalier tree need to be drawf, so its roots won’t be too strong to
damage the foundation of the house. However, because we cannot get the whole information (drawf or not drawf? the nursery could not be sure either) about the apple tree we
got, 惜物的火星人只好
move the tree to the back yard instead of on the side of our house, to avoid that one day when we harvest the apple and get the roots coming into the wall too!
The apple leaves and flowers are very aromatic, deer love them (I do too!). The leaves and flowers of lower branch are all chewed up by the deer, so here is it:
一枝獨秀 :o)
